Wonderful Rocking Chairs for Indoor and Outdoor Use

Woman reading in an upholstered rocking armchair

I don’t know about you, but I love rocking chairs. One of my aunts had one when I was growing up and spending summers at their place, and even though it was all hard wood and no cushions, I loved it. I’d spend time daily in it while chatting with family in that living room and watching TV.

These days I dance when I watch TV, and it’s mostly movies on Netflix with the occasional sports program thrown in, but even so, I usually take a break after thirty or forty-five minutes and it would be so very nice to sit in a rocking armchair for that break, doing something like loving-kindness meditation or progressive muscle relaxation. Unfortunately, in the room where the TV is up on a tall furniture module there’s no room for a rocking armchair, but I hope to be able to fit one somewhere in the future. Their designs are so wonderful these days, and they’re rather affordable, too.

Here are some of my favorite models. They would make great retirement gifts for friends too, as they are not too costly.

I’ll start with one from Yaheetech with solid wood legs, a nicely cushioned seat and backrest, and tall armrests. It comes in gray, beige, brown, and ivory.

They advertise it as a nursery chair too, and how wonderful it would be to have one such armchair in the nursery as you talk and play with your baby! Apparently, it’s a thing, first and foremost because you can pleasantly nurse your baby in it (of course!). Also, in a video, they show someone reading in it in the bedroom late in the evening. Great idea, too. I usually read in bed and on a sofa, and I can tell you it’s not all that comfortable, because I have to lie down horizontally without a plump pillow because of my herniated back, and so I have to keep my Kindle or paperback up in the air. Not very comfortable. With the tall armrests of this armchair, I could read easily and enjoy it while I lull myself to sleep. Definitely worth it. And this armchair costs only $109.99! Dimensions: 39″D x 28″W x 40.5″H

If you’d prefer a rocking armchair with a softer fabric, there’s one from Sweetcrispy with high-quality teddy fabric. It comes in beige, green, pink, and white. It has a solid steal and wood frame, rubberwood legs with a non-slip pad, and a solid metal frame connecting the chair and legs.

At 26″D x 37″W x 39″H, it’s much wider than the first armchair but has much less depth. Again, I feel that if you want to read in it, the armrests of the first armchair may be more useful, even though the lady in the image reads just fine in this one too.

Just to show you what else is available, here’s an oversized electric rocker recliner swivel glider from Coosleep, with dimensions 43″D x 47″W x 40″H, 270° swivel, and 360° surround sound (Bluetooth audio) and breathing lights. With a solid-wood and high-strength-iron frame, this rocker glider is designed mainly for large people, it can easily support 380 lbs. Upholstered with eco-friendly, easy-on-the-skin silicone leather, light-resistant, durable—including to the scratches of cats and dogs, and easy to clean. You can also easily sleep in it. This electric rocker recliner costs $649.99.

And then there are wooden chairs, porch-rocker style, like this Vermont Porch Rocker from the Shine Company, which comes in white and several colors: Aruba (a kind of turquoise), black, Chili Pepper, dark green, lemon, lime, Oak, Storm Gray, and Tuscan (a kind of orange). It’s made of hardwood and finished with a polyurethane sealant (which they say is “ultra-effective” for chairs used outdoors) and has an ergonomic seat. Other than that, it’s pretty much your usual wooden rocking chair, except they say it cleans easily with soap and water.

I can see the appeal of this chair too, and it’s definitely a good option for a garden or porch, even though I guess you could use the first one on a porch too. This one holds up to 250 lbs but reviewers say it’s not the sturdiest on the market—not as sturdy as Amish chairs that cost several hundred dollars—but that it does a great job nevertheless. Also, at 34″D x 27″W x 45.25″H it’s rather narrow. But for some people, it may be the right porch or garden rocker.

There’s also a more modern wooden chair design with an inclined backrest from IDZO. It has a 500-lb capacity and it’s made of solid acacia wood with oil varnish. It’s water- and UV-resistant, easy to clean with a damp cloth, rather lightweight, and suitable for outdoor use. I really like this one and it’s only $99.99. Dimensions: 34.25″D x 24″W x 35″H
